Synopsis

Based on the classic novel by Oscar Wilde, Kip Williams has adapted the tale into a one-woman, iconic production. First published back in 1890, Kip Williams has combined live performance and video to bring this cautionary story well and truly into contemporary times. The tale is based on aristocrat Dorian Gray, and his portrait which was painted by his friend, Basil Hallward. The story follows Dorian as he meets hedonist Lord Henry Wotton. From there, his worldview changes when he expresses his desire to sell his soul so that his portrait will age instead of him. The wish magically came true, but as Dorian pursues a libertine lifestyle, he quickly loses touch with the consequences of his doings.

“A delight – superbly acted and sung, brilliantly designed and rewardingly fresh.” – The Oscar Wilde Society

Creative Team

Sarah Snook (from HBO’s smash hit “Succession”) will make her Broadway debut in THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY. The captivating actress will perform all 26 characters, which is expertly choreographed through on-stage cameras to bring Oscar Wilde’s story to life. Sarah Snook, who took home a 2024 Olivier Award for her performance, said in a statement: “It was a singular privilege to bring The Picture of Dorian Gray to life in London and I am thrilled we will be able to share this astonishing production with audiences in New York,” Snook said. “From Oscar Wilde’s timeless words to the masterful reinterpretation Kip Williams has created, this tale of virtue, corruption, vanity and repercussion is an electrifying journey for me as much as for the audiences and I am filled with anticipation as we continue on this ambitious creative endeavor.”

Other creative team members include adapter and director Kip Williams. Meanwhile, Set and Costume Design is by Marg Horwell, Lighting Design by Nick Schlieper, Composition & Sound Design by Clemence Williams, Video Design by David Bergman, and Eryn Jean Norvill as Dramaturg & Creative Associate. The Broadway production of Sydney Theatre Company’s The Picture of Dorian Gray is produced by Michael Cassel, Adam Kenwright, Len Blavatnik and Danny Cohen, Daryl Roth, Amanda Lipitz and Henry Tisch. Kip Williams said in a statement: “I was so humbled by the response from audiences in London to The Picture of Dorian Gray, and I could not be more thrilled to be bringing this work to Broadway. It has been extraordinary to witness the way Oscar Wilde’s story continues to resonate with people today. I am so excited for audiences in New York to experience our show and to see the tour-de-force performance Sarah Snook gives in bringing to life the many characters in this new adaptation of Wilde’s remarkable story.”

Review

“The show has been choreographed, and of course rehearsed, to perfection to ensure all the cameras, set, costume and wig changes are seamless. The work of the whole creative team is outstanding. There are five screens that descend from the ceiling to allow Snook to act with pre-recorded versions of herself. David Bergman’s video design is ingenious and at one point, we could count seven versions of Snook depicted on stage. Marg Horwell has designed glorious costumes and outrageous wigs. Her sensational set design pairs with Nick Schlieper’s lighting and Clemence Williams’ contemporary and classical soundtrack to guide us through this ‘Wilde’ show.

It is only February but The Picture of Dorian Gray is sure to be one of the theatrical events of the year! Snook is the epitome of talent and delivers an unforgettable performance which ensures that this ambitious, inventive and avant-garde show is totally unmissable!” – West End Best Friend
