Suffs at Music Box Theatre NYC
Suffs is the Tony Award®-winning smash hit musical that’s making history on Broadway! Cultivated by Shaina Taub, who now stands tall as the first woman to ever independently win Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Score in the same season, Suffs has also been dubbed Best Musical (Outer Critics Circle Award), snagged not one but two Drama Desk Awards including Best Score, and is “unquestionably the most emotionally stirring musical of the season” (Chicago Tribune).
It’s a given that the women behind the suffragist movement—who called themselves “Suffs” for short—were great, but as they battled tirelessly for the right to vote, they were also wilfully stubborn, extremely passionate and hilariously funny. Suffs shine a light on their story: the beautiful friendships, the wrenching heartbreak, and how this movement fused them together—or, in some cases, tore them apart. Fearlessly exploring a struggle for equality that’s far from over, Suffs The Musical is a “theatrical masterpiece that demands to be seen” (Forbes) and a gentle reminder that progress is always on the cards but never guaranteed. Synopsis
Set in 1913 at the time when the women’s movement was heating up in America, Suffs follows the suffragists and their relentless pursuit of the right to vote. Stretching across and against generational, racial, and class constraints, these amazing, flawed women entertain and inspire the masses with the tale of their hard-won victory in an ongoing fight against inequality. Despite a lot of change since the passing of the Nineteenth Amendment more than a century ago, we’re still reminded that sometimes we need to look back, in order to stride fearlessly into the future.
“Suffs” for short, the Broadway hit takes its name from these empowering suffragists who tirelessly advocated for female equality when the patriarchy was hell-bent on keeping them voiceless and powerless. It is piloted by the Taub and Tony-nominated director Leigh Silverman, as well as an all female and non-binary cast, including the Tony winner Nikki M. James, Jenn Colella, Emily Skinner, and Grace McLean as President Woodrow Wilson. Shaina Taub helms the ensemble cast as real-life suffragist Alice Paul.
“THRILLING AND INSPIRING! A musically rich and dazzlingly entertaining musical. The message is resoundingly clear: KEEP MARCHING” – VARIETY
Creative Team
Hot off the press! Full casting has been revealed for the Broadway hit. The visionary composer, book writer, and lyricist Shaina Taub is set to star in her own musical, which had a sold-out run at the Public Theater in 2022 (also featuring Shaina Taub). Meanwhile, Jill Furman and Rachel Sussman are producing Suffs, alongside co-producers Hillary Clinton and Malala Yousafzai.
Shaina Taub is joined on stage by Tony Award winner Nikki M. James (from The Book of Mormon) as Ida B. Wells, Tony Award nominee Jenn Colella (from Come From Away) as Carrie Chapman Catt, Grace McLean (from Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812) as President Woodrow Wilson, Hannah Cruz as Inez Milholland, Kim Blanck as Ruza Wenclawska, Anastacia McCleskey as Mary Church Terrell, Ally Bonino as Lucy Burns, Tsilala Brock as Dudley Malone, Nadia Dandashi as Doris Stevens, and Tony Award nominee Emily Skinner (from Side Show) as Alva Belmont/Phoebe Burn. Most cast members—apart from Emily Skinner, Anastacia McCleskey, and Kim Blanck—are rejoining the cast from the Off-Broadway show. Meanwhile, Ally Bonino and Nadia Dandashi will make their Broadway debuts in the production.
Rounding out the cast will be Hawley Gould (Camelot) as the alternate for lead role Alice Paul, Jaygee Macapugay (from Here Lies Love) as Mollie Hay, and Laila Drew as Phyllis Terrell/Robin. The ensemble will also include the talented Dana Costello, Jenna Bainbridge Monica Tulia Ramirez, Ada Westfall, Christine Heesun Hwang, Kirsten Scott, Housso Semon, and D’Kaylah Unique Whitley.
Director Leigh Silverman is again head of direction for the Broadway production. Apart from returning music supervisor and music director Andrea Grody, the Suffs creative team will include promising newcomers choreographer Mayte Natalio, scenic designer Riccardo Hernández, costume designer Paul Tazewell, lighting designer Lap Chi Chu, sound designer Jason Crystal, as well as orchestrator Michael Starobin.
“Like all the best Broadway musicals, Suffs HUMANIZES, EMPOWERS, MOVES and entertains” – Chicago Tribune
History and Awards
Suffs premiered off-Broadway at The Public Theater in April 2022 with great critical acclaim. The show debuted on Broadway on the 18th April 2024 at the Music Box Theatre. It received glowing reviews from top critics, as well as seven nominations at the 77th Tony Awards, including Best Musical, winning two, for Best Book and Best Score. Suffs also snagged not one but two Drama Desk Awards including Best Score, and is “unquestionably the most emotionally stirring musical of the season” (Chicago Tribune).
“To all of the theatre kids out there watching—especially the wild little girls—go for it,” a very emotional Shaina Taub said from the stage. “You can do it. You are powerful. You are valuable. You are going to doubt yourself. It’s okay. I doubt myself all the time, but you can do it. I’m rooting for you.”
